Malay Alcyone (Latin Actenoides concretus) is a South Asian bird of the kingfisher family.
The body length of the Malay Alcyone is 24 cm, the weight is 70-90 g. The male has a green crest, a black mask on his eyes that extends to the back of his head, a large blue stripe-beard. The collar and underside of the male are red-brown, the back and tail are blue. The female has a green back and green wings with lighter spots. In flight, you can see rounded wings and a shiny, blue torso.
The Malay Alcyone lives in dense forests in the lowlands, usually below 1000 m above sea level, at the foot of Mount Kinabalu up to 1700 m.
The Malay Alcyone is a calm, timid bird. In search of food, it goes alone or in a pair. He catches his prey from shelter, primarily on the ground, but also in the crown of trees and in the water. The food consists of large and small vertebrates such as cicadas, barbel, praying mantises, snails, scorpions up to 9 cm long, small fish, blind snakes and lizards. Presumably, the bird is able to remove the poisonous sting of scorpions.
The Malay Alcyone digs a nesting hole more often in a sandbank, less often also in a dead tree trunk. The 60 cm long tunnel has a diameter of 10 cm and ends in a 20 cm nest chamber. Usually 2 eggs are laid in the nest. Incubation lasts approximately 22 days.
There are 3 known subspecies of the Malay Alcyone:
- A. c. concretus inhabits Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula to the north up to the Thai province of Trang.
- A. c. peristephes inhabits from Trang north to Tawoy in Myanmar.
- A. c. borneanus found in Borneo.
